The white vase, with its narrow, undulating folds, evokes the flowing silk of a traditional Japanese garment. Yet this intricate form was made from plastic using a 3D printer by the artist’s husband. An unexpected reversal emerges: modern technology takes on the appearance of tradition, while traditional flowers defy the conventions of representation, as though playing their own game between ornament and reality. There is something of the Japanese art of mitate in this interplay — the art of unexpected associations, in which familiar things appear in a different guise.
